The victim was first approached on Eharmony.com, then moved to
Snapchat and later to
Telegram (@ekaterina_v1997). She introduced herself as a Russian woman
seeking a serious relationship and a “new life in America.” Using a VPN, she appeared
to be in the victim’s area, building trust with daily long chats, photos, and video calls.

Step-by-step scheme

• Airfare request: Claimed she could not afford a ticket; the victim paid about
  $998.
• Exit denial: Said she was blocked from leaving Russia due to an unpaid mortgage;
  the victim transferred about $15,000 to “pay off the debt.”
• Apartment sale: After allegedly selling property for 229,737
  (≈$200,000), she claimed the funds were frozen by the bank.
• Tax demand: Stated that $34,500 in taxes had to be paid
  in three installments of $11,500, starting September 29.

Tactics used

Even her supposed “father” participated, making a blessing call before travel. The entire
fraud pattern was staged to appear authentic, combining family involvement, official-looking
documents, and emotional video calls. Only after significant financial losses did the victim
begin to challenge the authenticity of her story.
