Scam Pattern: “Tetiana from Cherkasy”

This reported case shows a catfishing-style romance scam built on a false Ukrainian identity. The woman first appeared on the Swedish dating site se.match.com under the name “Zoe”, even though the platform is intended for Swedish women. After the initial contact on the dating site, she moved the conversation entirely to Gmail, using the address auraglow96@gmail.com. This case fits the broader pattern seen across our Russian scammer blacklist.

In email communication, she introduced herself as Tetiana, said her friends called her Tanya, and claimed to be 45 years old. She described herself as a single woman with no children, living alone in Cherkasy, Ukraine. She also claimed to work as a sales manager for metal doors, which gave her story a more ordinary and believable appearance.

The scam relied on a familiar pattern: a warm tone, attractive photos, a simple life story, and a believable wartime explanation for why she was looking for a man abroad instead of in Ukraine. She claimed that many men in Ukraine were either at the front, dead, or had left the country, and used this as emotional background to justify her presence on a foreign dating platform. She also said she used a translation program but could continue in English, which helped explain awkward communication while keeping the contact going.

Several red flags appeared very early. The profile was placed on a Swedish women’s dating site, but the woman later said she was from Cherkasy. The contact then shifted away from the dating platform and stayed on email instead of moving to a live video conversation. The victim also noticed the unusual age gap and the overall inconsistency of the story. When he tried to verify her identity, he found a real company employee named Tetiana working as a sales manager, but there was no photo confirming that the woman in the emails and the real employee were the same person. In other words, the name may simply have been stolen and reused.

At this stage, the pattern is less about direct money pressure and more about identity construction: using a foreign dating platform, a false name, attractive photos, a plausible Ukrainian backstory, and limited communication channels to create emotional trust before deeper manipulation can begin. This is often how larger romance scams start – first a believable persona, then stronger attachment, and only later requests, documents, or financial pressure. Similar tactics appear in other profiles on our site, including Tetiana Dryhola and Tetiana Kushnir.
