Scam Pattern: “Varvara Kuklina”

Romantic Contact and a Planned Visit to Switzerland

This reported case began in August 2024. The woman introduced herself as Varvara Kuklina Romanovna and developed an intense romantic relationship with the victim through Telegram. She regularly talked about feelings, mutual support, and a future personal meeting. Eventually, she said she wanted to visit him in Switzerland. The victim transferred money for a flight ticket and for the preparation and processing of documents allegedly required for a visa.

The available chat history clearly shows how the emotional attachment was built. Varvara described their relationship as something special, spoke about “fate,” spending weekends together, kisses, and eventually staying with the victim. At the same time, they discussed specific travel dates. This combination of emotional intimacy and an apparently imminent face-to-face meeting made the story much more believable.

If you are communicating with a Russian woman online and want to confirm who she really is before sending money, our Russian Woman Profile Verification can help verify her identity, background, contact details, and other available records.

First Financial Obstacle: Alleged Bank Debt

After money had already been sent for travel and visa-related expenses, another obstacle appeared. Varvara claimed that she could not leave Russia because of debts she allegedly owed to a bank. The story therefore shifted from simple travel planning to a financial problem that supposedly had to be resolved before the meeting could happen.

This is a common pattern in romance scams: the meeting is repeatedly presented as real and close, but shortly before it can happen, a new problem appears. Each new obstacle gives the scammer another reason to delay the meeting and ask for additional financial help.

Next Escalation: Alleged Cervical Cancer

According to the victim, Varvara later claimed that she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer and urgently needed surgery. The victim was also asked to cover these alleged medical expenses and sent additional money.

At this point, the scam moved from travel problems to a medical emergency. This is an especially powerful form of emotional manipulation because it combines fear, sympathy, urgency, and the belief that refusing to help could have serious consequences for someone the victim cares about.

Money Was Sent to Another Person

One of the most important details in this case is that the money was reportedly not transferred to an account belonging to Varvara Kuklina. The recipient was Mariya Sheyko Sergeevna. The victim therefore suspects a connection between the two identities.

When money intended for personal travel, visa processing, medical treatment, or other private expenses is sent to an unrelated third party, it is a serious warning sign. If a Russian passport is provided as proof of identity, it should be independently checked through a Russian Passport Verification before any further payments are made.

Two Video Calls — Two Different Women

Perhaps the strongest indication of identity fraud appeared during video calls. According to the victim, there were two video calls, but a different woman appeared each time. The victim concluded that “Varvara Kuklina Romanovna” was either a stolen or completely fabricated identity.

This detail is particularly important because a video call by itself does not prove a person’s identity. Organized romance scam operations can use different women for short video calls while another person handles the daily written communication.

Telegram Profiles and Phone Numbers Were Changed

During the relationship, the person changed her Telegram profile. In the available messages, she explained that her phone number was supposedly provided by the company she worked for and that the company had now issued new numbers. She then gave the victim a new Russian phone number, +7 987 723 8635, and a new Telegram contact.

The victim continued communicating with her through the new profile. Later, however, the person deleted the chat and blocked him, which caused part of the newer conversation to disappear. Only older screenshots remained.

Changing Russian phone numbers during a relationship is another detail worth checking. Our Russian Phone Number Lookup can help determine whether a number is connected to the claimed identity, messenger accounts, leaked records, or other available online data.

Promise to Return the Money

The messages also show Varvara assuring the victim that she would return the money after arriving to visit him. She even asked whether she could exchange the money into euros in advance. At the same time, she continued discussing a future meeting and claimed that she expected to arrive before December 21.

Promises to repay money can make a transfer feel less like a payment and more like temporary help between two people who supposedly have a future together. This can significantly lower the victim’s resistance to sending additional funds.

Key Warning Signs

  • Rapid emotional attachment: frequent romantic language, future plans, and repeated expressions of affection.
  • A future meeting used to maintain trust: the personal meeting was repeatedly discussed but never happened.
  • Repeated financial obstacles: flight costs, visa expenses, alleged bank debt, and later an urgent cancer operation.
  • Payments to a third party: money was transferred to an account belonging to Mariya Sheyko Sergeevna.
  • Different women on video calls: according to the victim, two different women appeared during two separate video calls.
  • Changing phone numbers and Telegram accounts: the contact details were changed during the relationship.
  • Chat deletion and blocking: the newer Telegram conversation was eventually deleted and the victim was blocked.

Conclusion

This case follows a multi-stage romance scam pattern: first emotional attachment, then concrete travel plans, followed by repeated financial obstacles, and finally an alleged medical emergency. The most serious warning signs are the payments to a third party and the victim’s report that different women appeared during separate video calls.
